Wood Care & Maintenance

You made an excellent choice in selecting teak furniture for your outdoor space.  The next step is to decide how you want to protect your investment.  One of the many benefits of teak is how it remains impervious to the elements.  While its color tones change, the durability and integrity of your furniture will not.  When new, teak will have a stunning golden brown tone.  As it is left outdoors, it will begin to weather and the vibrant golden tone with begin to fade.   Eventually,  your teak furniture will turn to a lovely silvery patina.  (The weathering process will occur quicker in moist environments versus drier climates).

If you wish to maintain your furniture's original color, use the Teak Protector seasonally.  If your furniture has weathered to the silvery patina and you want it to return to the original golden color, apply the Teak Cleaner and then apply the Teak Protector seasonally.  If you appreciate the silvery tone, do nothing other than periodic cleaning.  The choice is yours.

When teak is left outdoors, you will notice small cracks called "checking" that begin to appear. Checking occurs when the wood expands and contracts.  A lifting of the grain on the top edges of the arms and legs may also occur.  This is perfectly natural and after the weathering process is complete, it will return to its original smooth finish.  (If you want to aid this process along, you can simply clean your furniture with a soft bristle brush or sponge). Lastly, you may also see some water spots or other discoloration during the weathering process.  These eventually even out.

Periodic cleaning is necessary to maintain your furniture. It is recommended that you hose down your furniture with fresh water being mindful not to use a high pressure hose. Using a soft bristle brush and a solution consisting of 2/3 cup laundry detergent and 1/4 cup bleach diluted in 1 gallon of warm water, gently scrub your furniture.  When finished, rinse well to remove any remaining residue.  If you have a tough stain such as grease or wine, we recommend using the Teak Cleaner.  DO NOT USE TEAK OIL on your furniture if used outdoors.  Mildew or irregular coloring may occur.

NEW
When new, teak wood has a natural golden brown tone that is extremely appealing to the eye as seen in the picture. It will add a lovely, refreshing look to your deck, porch, or patio.

Your teak wood will begin to weather when exposed to the elements.  After being left outdoors for six months, your furniture will fade to the color on the left.  Its beauty remains unchanged.
